SURPLUS at L’angolo del Passato, Venice

Onar returns to Venice, for the the 5th time during the Venice Glass Week, to present work reflecting on the long-lasting relation between Murano and Istanbul in glassmaking history.

Bringing together upcycled functional glassworks and objects designed and produced by glass artist Felekşan Onar’s Glass Studio, Surplus emphasizes the positive impact of contemporary design. Alluding to design’s impact on social equality, the exhibition presents a series of designs composed of scrapped glass parts, all of which are leftovers from production. Onar responds to the linear “take-make-dispose” system with a sustainable and holistic production model, demonstrating that parts which are usually discarded could be pieces of art.

The exhibition praising this delicate material and its precise craftsmanship, aims to convey the spiritual aspect of human labour, and invites the producers and consumers both to envision a different future.
